What is the difference between Pilates and Yoga?
They are similar in that they are both mind/body practices, and that they work the body wholistically. Proper form is encouraged in yoga, it is encouraged and taught more in Pilates. They both focus on strength and fexibility, they just go about it in different ways.
Do I need to be flexible to do yoga or Pilates?
Not at all. Your flexibility will increase as you practice yoga. Your flexibilty is also increased with Pilates, but not as rapidly as Yoga.
What is yoga like?
There are many styles of yoga and many different teachers making it hard to generalize. There are gentle yoga classes and rigorous yoga classes. Breath, body and mind connect while practicing yoga, creating a moving meditation (even when it rigorous).
What is Tai Chi (Taiji)?
Tai Chi originated in ancient China and is now practiced throughout the world as a highly effective exercise for health and fitness. It generally involves slow, gentle movements that are integrated with one's breath, weight shifts, intention, and postural alignment.
Who can do Tai Chi?
You can learn our Tai Chi for Health programs regardless of fitness level or age. They are diesigned by tai chi and medical experts to be easy to learn, but effective. Movements can be modified to suit the participant. Go to www.tchi.org for more information.
I'm a beginner, what kind of class should I take?
We offer Introduction to Yoga and Tai Chi as "sessions" where you learn over time. Free introduction classes are offered periodically through the year. We also have Yoga Basics, Level 1 and "all levels" classes which cater to newcomers to the practice. When you begin Pilates, you should begin with private sessions.
What should I wear to class?
Comfortable clothing that allows you to move and bend freely is best. Many yogis wear long, fitted, strechy pants and shirts that allow free movement of the arms and shoulders. With Pilates clothing is similar, but may be looser, although your instructor is observing small movements. Tai Chi is done is very comfortable loose fitting clothing with barefeet or very flexible shoes.
What should I bring to class?
For beginners, all you need to bring is a water bottle and a workout towel, (yoga mat if you have one). The studio offers some extra mats at no charge.
What do I need to know for my first class?
Arrive at least 5-10 minutes minutes prior to the listed class start time.
I'm pregnant, can I still do yoga, tai chi or Pilates?
Yes, but always check with your doctor first to be safe. With Yoga and Pilates it may be uncomfortable and risky to practice if you have never practiced before being pregnant. We recommend only beginning early in the pregnancy, and speaking with the instructor before the class.
Can children do yoga, Pilates?
Yes. In fact, yoga and Pilates offer great benefits to children including learning self-health and body awareness while reducing stress and increasing strength, stamina, mental focus, and flexibility.
